The Digital Age in Chile: We Are Innovation Survey Reveals Citizens’ Attitudes and Perceptions

* Chileans seek more digitalization and fewer restrictions

* We Are Innovation uncovers Chile’s technological sentiments

Santiago, Chile (September 26, 2023) — We Are Innovation, a leader in promoting technology and digitalization, recently commissioned a public opinion study in Chile to decipher the Chilean perspective and perception of digitalization and the impact of technology on their lives.

The study “Perceptions of Chileans on Digitalization: A National Survey on Their Attitudes and Aspirations” revealed that the Chilean population is strongly inclined towards innovation. A striking 76 percent are against prohibitions or limitations imposed by the government in this area. This indicates clear support for freedom of innovation, which could significantly facilitate the adoption of new technologies and business models in the country.

The digitalization of governmental processes is an area where the Chilean population shows almost unanimous support. An astonishing 92 percent of respondents agree with undergoing this transformation, suggesting Chile could be on the verge of adopting a ‘government as a service’ model.

On the other hand, despite certain concerns related to automation, optimism prevails among Chileans regarding coexistence with Artificial Intelligence in the workplace. However, it is important to note that women tended to be more cautious in assessing this aspect. A significant shift was evident regarding work culture: 31 percent of Chileans have already adopted remote or hybrid work models. Conversely, only 1 percent expressed no interest in teleworking modalities.

Yet, challenges remain. 37 percent of participants feel that the country’s political leaders do not provide enough support towards innovation and digitalization. This perception suggests a clear call to action for adopting more proactive policies in this domain.

Federico N. Fernández, CEO of We Are Innovation: “Innovation and digitalization are not only modern trends but crucial and fundamental elements for the sustainable advancement of a nation. Our leaders, in both public and private sectors, must deeply understand their value, recognize their transformative potential, and work collaboratively to maximize their benefits, ensuring a brighter future for the entire Chilean society.”

Jorge Martínez, Project Manager at Vota en Línea: “Digital transformation tools are well-received by Chileans. The pandemic accelerated the use of digital platforms for delivery, transportation, and banking. Within the use of banking platforms, mobile apps of traditional banks have strongly positioned themselves in daily use, and alternatives like neo-banks are slowly emerging. However, the use of cryptocurrencies remains very low in our country.”

José Alberto León, Representative of We Are Innovation in Chile: “This promising climate of receptivity towards digitalization and innovation in Chile places us at a pivotal point for national development. The tangible social consensus offers a unique opportunity to establish robust policies and collaborative strategies that encourage the adoption of emerging technologies and position Chile as a beacon of technological innovation and leadership in the Ibero-American landscape.”

Alison A. Berbetty Omiste, Associate Researcher of We Are Innovation: “Achieving full digital transformation is not a task that can be accomplished overnight, but the data from Chile points to a willingness among its citizens, paving the way for initiatives and processes that create efficient environments for the population.”

Lucia F. García Encinas, Associate Researcher of We Are Innovation: “The survey shows that Chileans deeply value innovation and freedom as pillars for an economic environment that fosters advancement. Digitalization in Chile is perceived as a fundamental driver for economic and work development, underscoring the technological potential in improving life quality and efficiency of government services.”

Erick R. Vilca Espejo, Associate Researcher of We Are Innovation: “While the population and businesses have largely managed to adapt and migrate to the digital environment, we cannot underestimate the importance of the role of the State in digital transformation. It is crucial to ensure that the digital revolution is inclusive and beneficial for everyone. This governmental drive must focus on several pillars: technological infrastructure, digital education, digital governance, political regulation, the promotion of innovation, and cybersecurity.”

In conclusion, the public opinion survey commissioned by We Are Innovation and conducted by Vota en Línea reflects a highly positive attitude of the Chilean population towards digitalization and innovation. It is evident that technological adoption and digital transformation are rising trends in Chile, and it is imperative that authorities and the private sector collaborate closely to ensure that these trends continue to be harnessed for the country’s benefit. These perceptions underline the importance of listening to society, adapting strategies, and acting decisively to position Chile as a Latin American digital scene leader.
